Delicious Fake?

This is a recipe for apple pie is made without apples. They say if you didn't know better, you'd think that there really were apples in it. It's an old chemistry lab experiment to teach the limits of human senses. Blindfolded people are said to take a bite and swear they are eating apple pie. I have to say, I'm really curious about this.

No apple apple pie

1 9-inch double crust pie
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
25 Ritz crackers
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

2. Roll out pastry and set aside. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan.

3. In a small bowl mix together sugar and cream of tartar. Add mixture to boiling water and stir. Add crackers one at a time. Boil for 3 minutes. Do not stir!

4. Pour cracker mixture into pastry-lined pie pan. Sprinkle crackers with cinnamon and dot with butter. Put top crust in place and seal edges and cut a few steam vents.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, until crust is golden brown. You may need to cover the pie partway through baking with foil to prevent overbrowning of the crust.
