Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town
That's right kids, it's just a few days away.....be on your best behavior.
So, last night I'm driving home and the DJ on the station I was listening to took a call from a guy who wanted to hear a Christmas song. The DJ was giving him a hard time since it's a rock station and most Christmas songs don't fit into the rock theme. So the guy says "How about that one by The King....I know there's one Springsteen sings". The DJ didn't correct him and just played the song....but I would have had to correct him.
The King and The Boss are two totally diffent people. Sheesh.
Now that I got that off my chest, here is a simple recipe to take to parties or to the family dinner. Heck, you could even give it as a gift if you have not finished shopping!
White Chocolate Holiday Bark
The final product is really pretty!
1 pound finely chopped white chocolate chips 1 1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 1/4 cups shelled pistachio nuts with papery coating removed
Nestle a stainless steel bowl (or a heat proof glass bowl) into a saucepan, allowing a few inches of space to remain between the bottom of the bowl and the bottom of the saucepan. Line a baking sheet with foil. Pour a couple inches of water into the bottom half of the saucepan and heat over medium-low to just below a simmer. Put the chocolate in the top half of the saucepan and set over the hot water. Slowly melt the chocolate. If it gets too hot, it will skorch and that isn't good. Remove bowl from over the hot water just before all the chocolate melts. Stir vigorously until the chocolate melts completely. Stir in the oil until evenly blended. Chocolate is now tempered and ready to use. Keep within the 82 to 86 degree F range, returning bowl briefly to the saucepan if necessary.
Quickly stir the fruit and nuts into the chocolate. It's important to be quick about this because the chocolate will start to cool very fast and get hard and it won't be easy to spread. Spread chocolate mixture out on the prepared baking sheet so it's about 1/2-inch thick and the fruit and nuts are coated. Set bark aside at room temperature to harden. Break into angled pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Enjoy!

Wednesday Lyrics
Someday at Christmas men won't be boys Playing with bombs like kids play with toys One warm December our hearts will see A world where men are free
Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars When we have learned what Christmas is for When we have found what life's really worth There'll be peace on earth
Someday all our dreams will come to be Someday in a world where men are free Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmas we'll see a Man No hungry children, no empty hand One happy morning people will share Our world where people care
Someday at Christmas there'll be no tears All men are equal and no men have fears One shinning moment my heart ran away From our world today
Someday all our dreams will come to be Someday in a world where men are free Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmas man will not fail Take hope because your love will prevail Someday a new world that we can start With hope in every heart
Someday all our dreams will come to be Someday in a world where men are free Maybe not in time for you and me But someday at Christmastime Someday at Christmastime

Wednesday's lyrics...on Friday
Someone falls to pieces Sleeping all alone Someone kills the pain Spinning in the silence To finally drift away Someone gets excited In a chapel yard And catches a bouquet Another lays a dozen White roses on a grave
And to be yourself is all that you can do To be yourself is all that you can do
Someone finds salvation in everyone Another only pain Someone tries to hide himself Down inside his selfish brain Someone swears his true love Until the end of time Another runs away Separate or united Healthy or insane
And to be yourself is all that you can do To be yourself is all that you can do To be yourself is all that you can do Be yourself is all that you can do
Even when you've paid enough Been put upon or been held up Every single memory of the good or bad Faces of luck Don't lose any sleep tonight I'm sure everything will end up alright You may win or lose
But to be yourself is all that you can do To be yourself is all that you can do

Spirit
Nowadays, the Christmas spirit gets mixed up with the blues sparked by the holidays. We feel down, have less energy, put on a few pounds, and have difficulty getting up in the morning throughout the dark, short days of winter. Holiday blues have been around for a very long time....it's not something that has started in the last 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years. Holidays, for the most part, are happy and enjoyable, but even things that are happy and enjoyable can be stressful. It's a time when people accelerate their activities...sometimes overdo it in various ways, overparty, overspend, all of which can be stressful. The holidays are also something of a milestone for people. We think about where we are in life, look back at the year, make evaluations, and for many people, looking back make us feel bad. We tend to recall the not so good things and forget about our accomplishments. Of course we stress about small things like looking great at holiday events...having just the right outfit, what people will think of how we look...in the end, fretting over these things can result in having a terrible time. But all this stuff mentioned is getting off track from what this season is really about. There is the religious side of it which I cannot speak to because I am really very uneducated when it comes to the bible. But the other side of this season is about goodness, giving thanks....and giving.
Giving.
What's really makes me feel good this time of year. I'm not saying I don't like the "getting" part of the season, but I really do enjoy giving to others. Yesterday I stopped by a fire station on my way to work to drop off 7 Barbie dolls for Toys For Tots. I've been buying them all year long....each time I see one, I buy one. Greg asks me: "Don't you have enough of those?" The answer was always no. There are so many kids out there who don't have toys...100 dolls would not even make a dent in the number that is needed. So I buy them because I can...and because I should. It's a way to open your heart to others, to take the hard sharp edge off this world. We are becoming much to grumpy and bitter....it's time to shake that off and smile at the person in line next to you, let someone merge into your traffic lane rather than cutting them off, buy toys and food and give it to the people who are less fortunate than you this season. Let the spirit of Christmas into your heart and hold it there all year long. It makes me happy to know that 7 little girls eyes will widen and light up when they each get a Barbie doll this Christmas. They may keep their Barbie doll forever, who knows. And I made that happen....I will make 7 little girls happy this Christmas....and that lifts my spirit very high :)
I will leave you with a quote from A Christmas Carol:
Jabob's ghost says to Ebenezer Scrooge: "I wear the iron chain I forged in life. I earned it link by link, yard by yard. It's a ponderous chain. Do you know the length and weight of the strong chain you bare?"
Scrooge glanced around him on the floor, in the expectation of finding himself surrounded by a heavy iron chain: but could see nothing.
Jacob's ghost: "It was as long and as heavy as mine 7 Christmas Eves ago. You have labored on it since, Ebenezer...."
I believe it's important to try to keep the Christmas spirit in your heart all year long. Be kind and generous. Keep that iron chain in mind all year long.

a gift to yourself
Buy an inexpensive journal. Use it everyday.
Write a letter to yourself in the future.
Find a piece of poetry you respond to. Rewrite it and glue it into your journal.
Glue an envelope into your journal. For one week collect items you find on the street. Expose yourself to a new artist. Write about what moves you about their work.
Find a photo of a person you do not know. Write a brief bio about them.
Spend an hour drawing only red things.
Make a list of everything you buy in one day.
Go to a paint store. Collect 'chips' of all your favorite colors and glue them in your journal.
Buy yourself a card, write yourself a note, seal it, put it in your journal.
Go to your favorite place for dinner. Write every detail about what you ate.
Burn a CD of your favorite songs and put it in your journal.
Kiss a page of your journal with lipstick on.
Collect receipts for a week. Photo copy them and put it in your journal.
Tear the label off a can of something you eat and glue it in your journal.
Clip a cartoon from the newspaper and glue it in your journal.
When your journal is full, wrap it up like a gift and put it away for safe keeping. Put a note on it dated 20 years in the future. Open it on that date. Add something meaningful to it. Wrap it up again. Unwrap it again 10 years later.

The Tower of Babel
Okay, some serious stuff here.
My most favorite Christmas song, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, makes reference to the tower of Bable:
"Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever over it's Babel sounds The blessed angels sing"
I got to thinking about this and wondered what "Babel sounds" exactly means....so I did some investigation. Wow, what I found was pretty darn interesting and gives the song new meaning!
History of the Tower
The descendants of Noe migrated from the "east" across the plains to the land of Sennar. One day they got the idea to make a city and a tower ~ the top of the tower would reach to heaven and they would be famous when it was finished. The work was soon under way, but God changed their "tongue" so that they did not understand what each other was saying. The tower was never finished because of this and it collapsed! This it is said that this is how the earth got all the different languages. Pretty interesting, huh?
So go listen to "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" and see how you deep it is. Anne Murray sings it really well.

Tomorrow Greg and I are off to Disneyland for a mini getaway! Get it...."mini" ;-) Woo! Pictures to come next week!

Wednesday Lyrics
Do you remember me I sat upon your knee I wrote to you With childhood fantasies
Well, I'm all grown up now And still need help somehow I'm not a child But my heart still can dream
So here's my lifelong wish My grown up christmas list Not for myself But for a world in need
No more lives torn apart That wars would never start and wars would never start And time would heal all hearts And everyone would have a friend And right would always win And love would never end This is my grown up christmas list
As children we believed The grandest sight to see Was something lovely Wrapped beneath our tree
Well heaven surely knows That packages and bows Can never heal A hurting human soul
No more lives torn apart That wars would never start And time would heal all hearts And everyone would have a friend And right would always win And love would never end This is my grown up christmas list
What is this illusion called the innocence of youth Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth (there'd be)
No more lives torn apart That wars would never start And time would heal all hearts And everyone would have a friend And right would always win And love would never end, oh This is my grown up christmas list
This is my grown up christmas list

Better Safe Than Sorry
Did you know that December is the month when the most crimes in parking lots occur? I guess it would be obvious since more people are out shopping. Here are some tips to keep you safe. It never hurts to be extra careful in this crazy world we live in.
Tae Kwon Do teachers tell their students that the elbow is the strongest point on your body. Remember that if you are attacked.
As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP doing this! Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a had a fake limp, and often asked for help to carry things to his car. He would also act like he was having a lot of trouble getting things into his car...which is when he abducted his next victim.
This is from a tourist guide in New Orleans: If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. Run in the other direction!
Heaven forbid you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, but if you are, break the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will and you know people will call the police if arms are coming out of tail lights.
Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working or whatever and just sit there doing things like making a list, looking at a receipt, checking phone messages....don't do this! Predators will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side of your car or open your door. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
If someone is in the car with a gun, do not drive off! Instead, gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your air bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat, they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes ~ run! It is better than having your body found in a remote location.
If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely will not be a vital organ. Run in a zig-zag pattern!
ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.
A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, consider getting in your car from the passenger door. A lot of predators attack their victims by pulling them into vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
Take care and be safe!

Chargers vs Raiders
The Chargers sort of welcome the Raiders to our fine city this Sunday. The rivalry draws very large crowds every time they play....so it should be one heck of a game. Any true Charger fan cannot stand the Raiders...and I assume the feeling is mutual on the black and silver side of things. Heh.
Let me be the first to remind all Charger fans that there is still time to have Low Jack installed on your cars before Raider Nation invades us.
