I read something so profoundly good that I just have to share it with you. It came from Oprah's "What I know for Sure" book. Now before you roll your eyes ~ and I know some of you are ~ just keep reading because this is good stuff.

She says we need to sit for a minute or two every day and write down 5 things we are thankful for. I know a lot of people will not do this, so to those people, just consciously think of 5 things each day....maybe on your drive to work or in the shower or something. Okay, here is what she said:

"It's not easy being grateful all the time. But it's when you feel the *least* thankful that you are most in need of what gratitude can give you: perspective. Just knowing you have that daily list to complete allows you to look at your day differently, with an awareness of every sweet gesture and kind thought passed your way. When you learn to say thank you, you see the world anew. And as Meister Eckhart so eloquently stated: "If the only prayer you ever say in your whole life is "Thank You," that would suffice.""

It's true, you know....gratitude can give you perspective. Next time you feel bad because you want to go out for steak and you can only afford a hamburger from the $1 dollar menu.....be grateful you can afford that much.

My 5 things for today:

I'm thankful for the people who love me.
I'm thankful I have a home to go to.
I'm thankful that I have a good job.
I'm thankful that I'm an American.
I'm thankful I'm alive.

A Broken Digital Camera...

On a deserted beach in Thailand, a man found a broken digital camera. He had no idea he was holdiing images that were the last minutes of a couple's life.

Tsunami photos.

The story.

Another photo.

And another...

The second wave.

You will have to check out the picture series I took over the weekend for my photo class. They are mostly of Greg and Calvin. There are three with a Magic 8 Ball that crack me up every time I look at them. There are some good ones of Suzie, too. It's been hard to get good pictures of them, but this weekend I scored!

Thought For The Day

"When people say they are looking for happiness, I ask, "What are you giving to the world?" I'll never forget this couple who appeared on my show. The wife couldn't understand why their relationship had broken down. She kept saying, "He used to make me so happy. He doesn't make me happy anymore." What she couldn't see was that she was the cause of her own effect. Happiness is never something you get from other people. The happiness you feel is in direct proportion to the love you are able to give. If you think something is missing in your life or you're not getting what you deserve, remember there is no Yellow Brick Road. You lead life; it doesn't lead you."

do what you say ~ say what you mean

If there is one thing that bugs the heck out of me, it's when someone says they will do something and then they don't do it. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I do the things I say I'm going to do. I feel pretty confident making that statement. If I tell you I'll meet you at Starbucks for coffee, I will be at Starbucks for coffee. And if for some reason I can't be there, I will tell you. I won't just let you wait for me and not say a word until you contact me and ask what happened to us meeting.

So here is what happened to start me off on this rant.

I'm taking a Thursday night photography class thru UCSD Extensions. The first night the instructor tells us what's what with grades and what he expects of us. It's the standard kind of thing: be on time, turn in your work on time, come to class prepared, no missing class unless you are dying....all that stuff. He made a point of telling us he will grade our work online and we have to have it turned in every week by Tuesday evening because he does all the grading on Wednesday mornings. He talked about this for about 10 minutes.....no turning stuff in late. Fine, I think we all understood. So last week he sends an email to all of us saying he's running late with the grading but will have it done by Thursday afternoon and to check our accounts then. Okay, fine....stuff like this happens now and then.

This week I sent in my assignment on Sunday...well before the Tuesday due date. He emailed me and said I'd hear back from him "by Wednesday". Well, Wednesday morning rolls around and I had not heard from him so I was thinking maybe he meant "on Wednesday". Nope, not a peep from him at all on Wednesday. This morning (Thursday) when the alarm went off, I got up and checked my account. Still nothing. I emailed him and asked if there had been a problem with what I sent him or....? He writes back within 30 minutes and says this:

"There's not a problem, I'm going to post comments later this morning. My usual schedule of Weds. grading was thrown off by another commitment as well as an uncooperative 4 year old."

Let me see if I understand this. You want your class to be on time, turn their stuff in on time, don't miss a class and always be prepared....but you can flake on us two weeks in a row. In fact, you will tell us that you have other commitments that are more important and you have an unruly child that, interestingly enough, was mentioned last week when you said you were running behind with grading.

I was *very* tempted to write back to him and ask him if he knew the fee for taking this class. I was tempted to ask him if his personal life and other commitments were going to continue to get in the way of him *doing his job* again next week. I might be thinking crazy, but I expect that when I pay lots of money to take a class the teacher will show up and do whatever it is he says he will do when he says he will do it. I know we are just a small group of 30 people with digital cameras, but if we play by the rules, so must he.

SPAM

No, I'm not going to talk about canned meat products.

I see spam every day at work. It's a major problem. Even with all the fancy email filters and all the written advice, spam seems to still make it's way into people's lives and cause trouble beyond belief. I know you must have all heard about the PayPay and eBay scams by now. You get an email that says your PayPal or eBay account needs to be updated and to fork over your bank account number and everything will be straightened out.

Never......*NEVER* give your personal information to people via email.

There is even a Washington Mutual scam going on right now. Some people say this is confusing because it looks so real and if you have a Washington Mutual account, why wouldn't you think it was real? Well, when was the last time you got email from your bank? Never. They don't email. They call. I mean, where on your application for an account does it ask for an email address to be reached if there is a question about your account? AND, when you call to check your balance they want to know 20 things before they will even talk to you...like your SSN #, your mothers maiden name, etc. What makes people think they are going to bypass all that security? They're going to just email you and hope your ex con boyfiend who is jonesing for a little crack isn't reading your email?

*rolls eyes*

Come on people.....wake up and smell the spam. This would not be such a problem if we all just sat and thought about this stuff for a minute. When people click on links, reply to the messages, and open attachments, that's what keeps it all going. You are then known as a viable (and stupid) address. Your email address is sold to other spammers and it just goes from there. Plus, they infect your computer with viruses and all kinds of other bad things. So be smart. Think.

I'm going to leave you with one of the most common spam messages I see. It really blows my mind to think people fall for this crap.....if it were real, how would this dude know your email address!?! He just guessed?! And come on....no one named Prince Paul Pelely is going to be sending you email. Sheesh....

Dodge Ball

Now does that really sound like the name of a game people should be playing?

I hated playing dodge ball when I was in elementary school. The teacher would announce we'd get to go out and play a game of dodge ball and all the kids cheered....except me. Why on earth would a teacher think it's a good idea to take a room full of kids who have been pent up all afternoon minding their P's and Q's out for a friendly game of dodge ball? These kids are ready to let loose and take all their aggression and energry out on their classmates with a basket ball! Yes, we always used a basket ball.

I have a very vivid memory of being dressed in a baby blue sweater set with flowers embroidered all over it, a skirt, white tights, and little white shoes....waiting to be nailed with a basket ball. I would have liked to play jacks or something...not dodge ball.

I also remember having to play softball. Hated that, too. Nothing like a hard little ball coming 30mph right at you. I always ducked....you can imagine the grief I got for that from the other kids. Plus, I was always picked last for teams because everyone knew I was scared to catch the ball. So that was a fun thing to live thru as a kid. I was never an athlete....and never will be.

I liked to paint and doodle. Science projects always interested me, too. I liked looking stuff up in the encyclopedia and then writing a report on my findings. Indoor stuff was my game....except math. Hate math. But everything else was cool. Especially art. Seems my artwork always made it up on the wall for display along with a few others. It was cool to look up at the wall during the math lecture and see my artwork there. Elbow on the desk, chin planted in the palm of my hand gazing at the art on the wall while teacher drilled on and on about long division. Was never good at long division....can't imagine why.

Give Blood Because I Can't

Last Thursday I went down to the food court at work to get something to eat and was stopped on the way by a woman asking me to give blood to the Red Cross. They had their big ole blood mobiles out there. I figured what the heck and let them drain a pint out of me. I came back to the office and almost fainted and almost puked. That was fun. I had to work hard not to let either of those two things happen.

"Don't puke....don't puke....don't puke....okay, put your head down before you fall down...." is what I was telling myself the whole time.

I should have known better though....it happens to me almost everytime I give blood. I'm just not cut out for it anymore I guess. I laid on the floor with my feet up on a chair and started to feel better. Good thing because I'm taking a digital photography class and the first class was that night. I think it'll be fun and hopefully I will learn a lot about my new camera :)

Speaking of the camera, I'll be snapping pictures of my feet tonight! Greg and I were in Old Navy and they are having a flip-flop model contest! Yup, I've often said my feet are my best feature, so I'm going enter. If you wanna enter, here is the
link. Wish me luck!
