Not just any day off

This is long, but very worth reading.

What Is Memorial Day?
by LT Bobby Ross

My years whirl past me. Swirling. Dry, broken grass hovering in a spring breeze. Can I remember my experiences in war? Hardly. Fighting for my country, my youth invested, seems such a long time ago, and so unimportant. The calendar this year marks Memorial Day on the 29th of May,2000. Have I lost something? The traditional Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, is on the 30th of May. This observed Memorial Day on May 29th coincidentally allows for a national three day holiday. Such is commercialism's capitalistic American display. But why do I feel so stricken, like I have abandoned old friends from long ago? Their ghosts consort with my floating years, and their spirits coast around my presence. Another three day holiday! Memorial Day! Maybe me and the kids can go camping? Or, to the beach? Memorial Day is fun! This is the inconsiderate, thoughtless approach to this meaningful, and consecrated moment representing one three hundred and sixty-fifth of our year. What is the meaning of Memorial Day? Is it merely a three day escape from our worldly duties? Or, is it the official beginning of summer? Is selling more hot dogs at the ballpark the overriding clarification? Many souls, sacrificed in war, in duty to America, are wandering. They drift in a heavenly place, minus their future here upon earth. Tomorrows were forfeited. Given up so our nation would invigorate free souls, aspire them to freedom, and justly allow their lives lived as they prefer. Raising offspring above restrictions, as they desire. Those lost lives giving we, the living, what we want freely. Those are the souls we respect on Memorial Day. This means it is a sacred day. Without retrospect, sacrifice is mute. Old Glory does not wave by accident. It flutters in the spring air revealing honor. The color red represents the blood bloom from those who fell, those who clawed, those who cried in horrible pain. Those who died fast. And, those who died ever so slowly. They did their duty. When I see Old Glory waving on a sunny, end of May day, the pigment red gushes from millions of souls, floating, not with us, anymore. They are amongst our heroes, cajoling with angels with their champions, conquerors and commanders. Friends and loved ones gather, over the rave, witness to those who gave more than anyone should be required to relinquish. They did not want to yield. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and when the moment harshly struck them their fatal blow, they cried for their mother, or their friend. Then there were those, many of those, who knew exactly what they were giving. They moved forward knowingly. They lost their lives so their mission would be accomplished. Fools! Some intellects can say that. One would have to be an imbecile to give up life, no matter what the cause. For a flag? Futile! For a country! More pointless! For freedom! What freedom is there in mortality? Yes, fools they may have been, but their numbers add up in an awesome display of American loss! Veterans' Cemeteries, white badges sailing row after row after row upon green grass, almost never ending, creeping onto the horizon. Constant reminders of the devastation of our human treasure. Mothers' tears, enough to fill an ocean to overflow. Sweethearts, broken hearted, reading telegrams. Sons and daughters, many unborn, wakening at birth to a devastated family suffering from a victim of war there no more. And what does all this macabre math equal? Memorial Day is the correct answer. Few Americans know a person who died in war. Their family trees have lost some leaves, falling as they fought in one of America's wars, or discarded in the peacetime military. We are a busy people. We have business to capture. Our kids are in school. We have chores. Mundane, or surrealistic. We are a spirited society, seeking applications to improve ourselves and our communities. We are a helpful populace, always there when the going gets tough to help those who have suffered the tragedies of nature, whether a hurricane or a famine. Americans are always the first on the scene worldwide bearing their gifts of human spirit and abundance. This is why it is so puzzling that the meaning of Memorial Day seems to lack substance to many of our own people. Even with the day itself. Put back to accommodate a holiday schedule fixed by some organism no one knows, yet powerful enough to do so, the day itself lacks consequence to too many. Many who never knew a person who died inservice to America are wrought with the invisible pain of not feeling for those who do. Americans take things for granted. We have so much. So very much. Endless choices. These options are not available worldwide. Our shelves are full. Unlike many in other nations of the world. So many are empty or offer very limited selections. Those American fighting men and women killed in battle whose souls are floating actually made available these wondrous choices we have every day of our American lives. Yet, most of our youngsters have no idea whatsoever what this means. They don't learn this in school. We must teach them. For without knowledge, they may end up thinking, or believing, all these marvelous selections came without circumstance. Minus anything. Equaling no meaning. Our nation needs to halt and perceive the flags and flowers on our Veterans graves on this consecrated holiday. We need to lift a common voice of adoration to those floating spirits of our onetime American Warriors, and extol them with a salutation. We have not come that far with our technological miracles of this millennium to become crass. We still need respect. Our backs can not turn from formality. Our eyes can not look away from custom. Our voices must not resonate in silence against honor and glory. To do so will leave us hollow, only to fill us with that which is desolate and lacking potential. This is not the true meaning of Memorial Day. The heartfelt significance requires reminding. Story telling. Wisdom being passed on from our Veterans to our younger generations. An interpretation certified by those who remember the horrors of war. Without this core, our society can not remain genuine. It becomes contemptible. It rots from within. These floating souls of our lost American Warriors are a powerful force, for they live within our hearts. They constantly seek justification for their contributions, and they are real within us. Such is what our American substance stands for, where character is developed, individually is guaranteed, and a community, a nation, survives. America enters the 21st Century as the most powerful entity human kind has ever experienced. America permeates this next century withvast responsibilities. Our children must bear this promise. We can not turn our backs on these bygone descendants, nor can we do so upon ourselves. Memorial Day offers us the opportunity to express a moment of solitude where each of us can personify in our own way what we feel. I only speak for my myself, as one who has bared his soul to the dread of war. So my father did, and his father's father before him, and their souls float amongst the multitudes. My mother and her mother held their Veterans after they returned from war, tears streaming down their cheeks in gratitude for their safe return. And there were those in my ancestry who did not return from war. And their mothers' tears soaked the pillows on beds for generations to sleep upon. Their souls are the dreams that drift amongst the floating, gathering at the end of May in the breeze of summer's coming, in the cool glass of lemonade at the child's street side stand, in the cheers at the ball game from the crowd rooting their team to victory and enjoying the best hot dogs in the world. Let us all stop for a moment, whether it is on the traditional day, or the observed Memorial Day, or even at the end of May, and reach for those floating souls. Let us reveal to them how much we cherish their sacrifice for our free people. Let these memories harvest our recognition of the meaning of Memorial Day in a very simple word. And let that word, simply stated be: Thanks.

TGIF

Sometimes people just say TGIF because it's Friday and they're glad the weekend is here....but I especially mean it when I say it this time. Been one of those weeks.

Greg is such a good guy. Last night he grilled surf & turf for dinner! It was yummy....steak and shrimp with asparagus on the side. I love asparagus! It was all yummy....he did an awesome job on all of it.

*Kisses to my honey!*

+-+-+

Last weekend I got my camera out and was shooting pictures. I really like the way this one turned out.

I like the tag on this tea bag

It's that a cute cup? I love it....I have the matching boy one, too. But what I really like is the tag on the tea bag. Cup of Joy. Too cute.

I'm not sure what I did with myself before I got my camera and joined Flickr. I must have been doing something, but I don't know what. Last night I was walking around with it (my camera) and there was Greg watching TV. I'm about to take a shot of him and I get the hand. Yes, that's right....the "talk to the hand" gesture. And guess what? I almost took a picture of his hand! I tell you....I find potential in almost everything....much to his chagrin. *chuckle*

Alrightly then ~ have a good weekend, all!!

My new favorite song is by Anna Nalick. It's called "Breathe". The lyrics are profound ~ I like that. I'm so drawn to songs that mean something. She has a Alanis Morissette sound to her, but better. Sometimes Alanis can get a little too low in her tone. Anna Nalick sounds feminine. Here are the lyrics. I've bolded my favorite parts, tho I really like the entire song.

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake, "Can you help me unravel my latest mistake? I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season" Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes. Like they have any right at all to criticize, Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable. And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table. No one can find the rewind button, girl. So cradle your head in your hands. And breathe...just breathe

In May he turn 21 on the base at Fort Bliss. "Just a day", he sat down to the flask in his fist, "Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year." Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while. But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles, Wanna hold him. Maybe I'll just sing about it

Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable, And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table. No one can find the rewind button, boys, So cradle your head in your hands, And breathe...just breathe

There's a light at each end of this tunnel, You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out. And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again. If you only try turning around

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song. If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to. And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud. And I know that you'll use them, however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable, And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table. No one can find the rewind button now. Sing it if you understand. And breathe, just breathe woah breathe, just breathe, oh breathe, just breathe

--

I've been having serious thoughts lately. Like I'm supposed to be doing something....but I don't know what it is. I feel like there is something out there that will bring me joy and make me happy....if only I could find it. What is it? How will I find it? Do I just go about my business and hope I bump into it or do I need to start going out of my way looking for....whatever it is? It's weird. I know something is waiting for me....

Kittens

I just had to post these pictures I found on Flickr.

He looks like a big military guy by day and big softie by night.

Now this is a cute Pop Tart!

"Peace Man....it's all cool...."

This one looks like one of those singing cats at Disneyland.

Dogs

"HAHAHAHAHA! Stop it....you're killin' me here!"

"Yes, that's it....relax. Find your inner hound harmony. Let your mind go back to the day you chased the mailman for two blocks...yes, that was a good day indeed."

This goes into the what not to wear file. If you are going to ride on your boyfriends motorcycle, don't wear a skirt that doesn't cover your ass.

Seen the Paris Hilton commercial that has everyone so up in arms? People are calling it soft porn. Do they watch shows like "Rescue Me"? Now that's soft porn. What people should be up in arms about is that ugly bathing suit they picked out for her to wear. But hey, it's Carl's Jr....can't expect much from people who work for Carl Karcher.

For Greg

"Saw you
That was all I had to see
Wanted you
Had to have you next to me
And from that moment
I knew that you’d be all I’d ever need

And there’s a place inside my heart
Nobody’s touched before
And when I found you,
I found all that I’ve been searching for
You turned my world around

All I know
Is it feels like forever
All I know
Is I love the way it feels
All I see
is how good we are together
And I never want to see it slip away
I’ll never let you go
Its all I know"

Expired

Did you know those little packets of ketchup you get from fast food places go bad? I had no idea....thought ketchup was like the food they give to astronaut...lasts forever. Well it dosen't. Today I brought leftover pot roast for lunch and when I opened my ketchup packet and squirted it all over the top of my pot roast....it was BROWN. For a minute I thought I had mistakenly put BBQ sauce on it. But no...it was expired ketchup...rotten ketchup. And of course I squirted it on the top of the meat rather than next to it for dipping. Had to rinse the ketchup off with water....sorta rinsed away some of that good pot roast flavor, too.

Lunch kinda sucked today.
....

It takes only one drink to get me drunk. The trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or the fourteenth.

Operator Error

One of my all-time favorite quotes is:

A computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history - with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila. ~~Mitch Ratliffe

A computer does let you make mistakes....it does just what you tell it to do. I got to thinking about my biggest computer mistakes and a few really stand out.

The most recent that I can think of was when I deleted an entire section of IP addresses from the nameserver at work. I know that doesn't mean much to some of you. What it boils down to is ~ I cut off internet access to about 500 people on campus. Yeah, wasn't a good day.

Then there was the time I thought I was sending email to Greg....but I mistakenly sent it to this guy I worked with at my old job. I hardly ever send Greg email and when I do, it's a joke or a funny picture of something...rarely something personal. Well this time it was a little personal. Let's just say this old co-worker of mine knows way more than I'd like him to know about Greg and I.

An ex boss of mine left open access to a file that had explicit details of an affiar he was having with a woman who called the office 20 times a week claiming to be his real estate agent. I'm sure she was....she was just his mistress, too. He found out I had seen the file and took me to his office where he barked at me about confidentially this, confidentially that....blah, blah, blah. As soon as I got back to my desk I pressed the print key while it was still on my screen. Out came 10 pages of nity gritty details. I folded them up and put them in my purse. Confidentially my ass. Me seeing that had to give him a few sleepless nights.

So what computer mistakes have you made? Post them in the comments :)

It's Sunday Morning

Sunday morning rain is falling
Steal some covers share some skin
Clouds are shrouding us in moments unforgettable
You twist to fit the mold that I am in
But things just get so crazy living life gets hard to do
And I would gladly hit the road get up and go if I knew
That someday it would bring me back to you
That someday it would bring me back to you

That may be all I need
In darkness she is all I see
Come and rest your bones with me
Driving slow on sunday morning
And I never want to leave

Fingers trace your every outline
Paint a picture with my hands
Back and forth we sway like branches in a storm
Change the weather still together when it ends

That may be all I need
In darkness she is all I see
Come and rest your bones with me
Driving slow on sunday morning
And I never want to leave

But things just get so crazy living life gets hard to do
Sunday morning rain is falling and I’m calling out to you
Singing someday it’ll bring me back to you
Find a way to bring myself home to you

And you may not know
That may be all I need
In darkness she is all I see
Come and rest your bones with me
Driving slow?

My Fish....Walter

My beta fish, Walter, died Tuesday. He is of the earth now. I could not flush him...that just seems so...I don't know...cold. I buried him in a nice spot under a tree just outside my office. I told someone this and they instantly started making comments: "You know, he will just rot and the bugs will eat him and that stary cat will dig up what's left of him and...blah, blah, blah".

Why do people do that? I mean, I know all that is going to happen so I don't need someone prattling on telling me that my choice not to send him to pipes full of waste just means he'll be eaten by bugs and a stray cat. Whatever people....I know he's dead and only a fish, but a loss is a loss regardless of how insignificant it seems.

In other news...

Yoda and Chewbacca on my toes

I noticed the self-portrait I took of Yoda and Chewbacca on my toes has been getting a lot of views lately. It actually took over first place in the most viewed catagory. The previous image in first place was Greg & Devil Cat.

Greg & Devil Cat

I could not help but be curious at this sudden spike in views, but I just figured since I'm getting a lot of traffic on my pages, it must mean people are taking a closer look at that one. So yesterday I get an email in my Flickr mailbox from a guy who gives me an FYI that he posted a link to this picture in some Star Wars community forum. Ahhhh....now I understand. So that's kind of cool. I looked at the picture again and realized it made very little sense. Why would a woman have Yoda and Chewbacca Pez heads on her toes?! So I posted a little note about what it was for and why I did it so people don't think I'm a looney toones woman with a camera, 3 house cats, and a foot fetish :)

Need To Feed An Army?

No...I'm serious. If you have an army to feed, I have the recipe for you. It makes enough for 96 people!!! And who dosen't like meatloaf? What about a side dish....20 boxes of instant mashed potatoes, of course!! Oh, and don't forget the 40 bags of frozen corn. Tell them it's BYOB ~ bring your own beverage ;-)

Meatloaf For An Army

1/2 cup olive oil
4 pounds red bell pepper, cored, seeded, and minced
4 pounds onion, trimmed and minced
1 1/2 cups minced garlic
1 1/2 cups soy sauce
6 tablespoons salt
4 tablespoons black pepper
24 eggs
6 cups cream
10 pounds bread crumbs
31 pounds ground beef
3 1/2 cups tomato paste

Meatloaf Gravy, recipe follows

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Heat oil in a pot. Saute bell pepper, onion, and garlic in the hot oil for 5 minutes. Let it cool. Mix soy sauce, salt, black pepper, eggs, cream, and bread crumbs together well. Add oil, bell pepper, onion, and garlic and mix well. By hand, mix ground beef.

Place 6-1/2 pounds of this mix into each meatloaf pan. Ice the top of each loaf with 1/2 cup of tomato paste. Bake for about 2 hours, until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. Remove the pans from the oven and drain all of the grease out well. Cool in pans until cool enough to turn out. Serve with Meatloaf Gravy.

Meatloaf Gravy

3 pounds butter
5 pounds diced onions
5 pounds chopped mushrooms
1/4 cup minced garlic
2 3/4 pounds pastry flour
5 1/2 gallon water
1 3/4 pounds beef base
10 bay leaves
2 tablespoons black pepper

Melt butter in large pot. When hot, add onions, mushrooms, and garlic and saute until softened and golden. Add flour and mix in well to make a roux. Add water, beef base, bay leaves, and pepper and mix well. Bring to a boil. Then simmer for 30 minutes or until thickened enough. Strain and cool.

Renee and Kenny--They Do!

Renée Zellweger is a singleton no more.

After a whirlwind four-month courtship, the erstwhile Bridget Jones' Diary spinster was hitched to country star Kenny Chesney Monday in the Virgin Islands, her publicist confirmed to E!

The freshly minted marrieds--henceforth known as "RenKen"--tied the knot "in front of close friends and family in St. John," said Zellweger publicist Nanci Ryder, who offered few details of the surprise nuptials, other than Zellweger's gown of choice (a strapless Carolina Herrera number).

Chesney went barefoot down the aisle and, ever the cowboy, wore his trusty black Stetson during the 15-minute ceremony.

"I am incredibly happy. I may well be the luckiest man alive," Chesney said in a statement. "To be so in love with someone who is so perfect for me. It's just hard to imagine that I'm not going to wake up."

The wedding reception was held afterward at Chesney's house in the gated community of Peter Bay, on the north side of the island. On Sunday, Zellweger, Chesney and their 50-person party partied at Rhumb Lines restaurant in downtown Cruz Bay, the main town on the island, per reports.

Zellweger and Chesney have only been dating since Jan. 15, when they met at the Concert of Hope tsunami relief benefit, where he performed and she answered phones. She served him his traditional margarita at an Apr. 29 show in Jacksonville, Florida, and last week the couple were spotted getting all kissy at a P.F. Chang's restaurant near Nashville. This week's People quotes Zellweger's publicist saying the twosome "are in the very early stages of getting to know each other."

We can't wait to see what happens once they get past that awkward phase.

This is the first marriage for both.

Zellweger, who turned 36 in April, is eight months over her relationship with another musician, White Stripes frontman Jack White. The Texas-born beauty's other leading men have included her Me, Myself & Irene costar Jim Carrey in 1999-2000 and George Clooney in the mid-'90s. Aside from her Bridget Jones flicks, Zellweger is best known for such films as Jerry Maguire, Chicago and Cold Mountain, the last of which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Chesney, 37, was previously engaged to Mandy Weals, but they split after calling off their wedding in 1998. One of Nashville's biggest acts, Chesney won Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards last November. His latest album, Be As You Are: Songs from an Old Blue Chair, debuted atop the Billboard Hot 200 in February. It was his third straight chart-topper, following 2004's When the Sun Goes Down and 2002's No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem.

According to Country Weekly magazine, Chesney long ago named Zellweger as his favorite actress and was inspired to write his 1999 hit "You Had Me from Hello" after her famous line in Jerry Maguire.

The newlyweds' honeymoon will be over soon, however. Chesney is due in Little Rock, Arkansas, on Thursday for a concert and is slated to perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards on May 17, while Zellweger hits the PR circuit later this month for her new film, Cinderella Man, which is due in theaters June 3.

Don't Drink The Water In Hollywood

Everyone is turning up pregnant! Now it's Jennifer Garner. Ben Jen are going to be parents! I really hope they get married and stay married *forever*. I like him a lot and I wish he'd sit back and live the American dream with someone nice like Jennifer Garner. You cannot imagine how glad I am he didn't make puppies with that skanky Lopez woman. Yeesh....I'm so glad that's over. No one in Hollywood seems to make it anymore. I still have visions of Tom & Nicole patching things up.

"Snakes.....I hate snakes..."

I almost ran over a snake. I was driving along and came to an intersection and had the green light. Suddenly I see a snake slithering across the street....in the cross walk zone. I'm not kidding. What was I supposed to do? Come to a screetching halt so the snake could cross the road? I know this sounds like a joke, but it's not. I really didn't want to run him over, but I didn't have any choice. I looked back in the rear view mirror and there he was....still slithering! I'd managed to miss him completely. Did the snake manage to cross to the other side of the road unscathed? We will never know because I ain't going back to check for snake parts.

Kudos to the first person to tell me who said the above snake quote :)

Yes, I'm quoting her again.

"I know that if you'll just be yourself and follow your calling, success will lay itself before you in ways you never imagined. That doesn't mean you'll be yachting around the world. Real success means creating a life of meaning through service that fulfills your reason for being here."
