Amazing Homes

Greg and I went to Tour de Elegance a few weeks ago ~ wow. It's just amazing how beautiful a house can be. I had two favorites, but at $3.6million, it's just a tad out of my price range. When we got back to our humble little flat, it felt....well, like a HUD house. My undecorated bedroom looked like a tornado had blown thru. We have lived there for 6 years and I have never decorated it. I think I'm scared I'll spend the money to decorate it and then be unhappy and want to change it. I do have a vision of what I want it to look like, and I know I can do it, but my ever present cautious side tells me to be sure before I do anything. And of couse now I want my bedroom to look just like one we saw, tho space would be a problem in duplicating the look. The bedroom I liked the most was 1200 sq. ft. Sigh. So if you go, let the luxury wear off before you head back home or all you'll be able to think about is taking a huge loan out to bulldoze your house and start from scratch.

If you don't feel like doing the walking, you can watch a special on HGTV August 3rd at 9pm. It's called The Top 10 Most Amazing Homes. These are the top 10 in the US. No expense spared, no limits, just luxury to the max. Here's more about it if you are interested.

HGTV Special

Note: Before everyone emails me that my email link is broken and my new guestbook feature isn't quite working....I know. I was trying to be all creative when, wouldn't you know it, my darn job got in the way and I had to put it on the back burner. *chuckle* So I'll get them both working....someday. :-)

www.EverythingIsOnTheInternet.com

If you have a computer that is connected to the Internet, you pretty much have the world at your fingertips. You can find everything on the Internet. Today I found out I don't need that big ole phone book any more. They white/yellow pages are online now. It's good news for me because I dislike the phone book. It's big and cumbersome, not to mention it takes up a lot of room and is usually laying on the floor looking ugly...

I did a quick search to see how easy it was to use, and I found what I was looking for in well under a minute. The site is easy to navigate and offers way more information than the paper book does. I may never use the actual book again.

Eating Right

Everyone knows the drill with eating right ~ what we should eat .vs what we know we should avoid. But it's hard sometimes....okay, a lot of the time. We wish we could have that carmel brownie frappuccino with whipped cream everyday and not see the extra inches as a result. I know I feel bad having one on Sunday nights on the way to Greg's softball game. And that's only one night out of the whole week! Those frappuccino's have some ungodly amount of fat and calories. Anyway, sometimes we need a kick in the butt to get us back on track. I read this article, and it's the same old stuff we've read before about how to choose your meals wisely, but sometimes just reading an article like this is enough to get me back on track.

Lunch Lesson
By Liz Yeh for WeightWatchers.com

You've finally resolved to lose those extra pounds, and your weight loss efforts have been going okay - when you're at home. But what do you do when you forget to pack lunch or get stuck in a high-calorie catered meeting? It's harder to stay on track when you're at the mercy of other people's food!

How do you keep from falling off the wagon? Here are some guidelines to help you reach your goal:

Watch your portions. Healthful eating is largely about portion control. Have the chicken chow mein, but only eat 1 cup of the massive portion they give you. Fill out the rest of your plate with a side order of steamed veggies.

Look at preparation. In the lunch line, skip the pot roast or any other fried, greasy food that will make you feel weighed-down in the afternoon. Instead, head for grilled or steamed dishes. Choose lean sources of protein, such as chicken or fish. If breading or creamy sauces are unavoidable, then scrape them off and add lemon juice, salt and pepper. Alternatively, spice it up - many flavorful options such as mustard, soy sauce and vinegar are very healthy.

Go for lean. When it comes to sandwiches from the deli, again, stick with the leaner meats (chicken, turkey, even roast beef) and steer clear of high-fat mayo or dressings. Instead of Thousand Island dressing on your pastrami sandwich, use mustard. Choose flavorful, high-fiber bread over white.

Soup it up. In general, soup provides some good choices. It's warming and filling, perfect for cold weather or overly air-conditioned offices. Minestrone, lentil, tomato and other vegetable soups are good choices, and cream of anything doesn't have to be off-limits - just reduce your portion size and team it up with a fresh salad.

-

One last thing. I know it's easy to tell the guy at Wendy's/McDonald's/Burger King....or where ever it is you go to "super-size" your greasy fast food order for just a measley .30something cents. Don't do it. You don't need all those extra fries and soda. Remember, portion control! And kids' meals are always an easy strategy for controlling your portion sizes. Now go plan a healthy lunch! ;->

Places I'd Like To Stay Before I Die

I've started making a list of these things. Not that I think I'm going to die soon or anything, but I figure I better start making the list so I can get busy making the plans to get to these places. I won't list them all ~ I'll just list the two new additions.

The Wilard Hotel ~ 1401 Pennsylvania Avenue

The address alone should clue you into why I way to stay there. It has so much history and is really close to all the things I want to see in Washington. Some of the rooms have views of the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Smihsonian and the Library of Congress. I really want to stay there...it is luxury at it's best. Here are a few of the standard things you can expect to find in your room

*Bathroom telephone
*Voice mail
*Internet & E-mail hook-ups
*In Room Movies
*Nintendo
*Individual climate control
*Bathrobe
*Minibar
*Laundry and valet service
*Complimentary newspaper
*Complimentary shoe-shine

I'd take my best shoes and get that shoe-shine. I'm sure you can buy the robes...but I suppose they are $200 each or something crazy like that. Hold onto your set for the nightly room rate: $340. But I bet it's worth it. These rooms are *BEAUTIFUL*. And I want to stay there more for the history of it....so many famous people have been there. Presidents have had dinner in The Wilard Room...it has the prestigious AAA 4-Diamond award. Gotta go stay there. Start saving, Greg.

Elbow Beach Hotel - Bermuda's South Shore

Again, it's location. Classic beach resort that's kicked up a notch. On their private beach, they have a cottage that looks like pure luxury. Part of the reason I don't like going into the water here in SD is because you can't see what's in the water. I'd go in water there. I think I'd turn into a fish! Who would not want to swim in crystal clear warm water and then bake in the sun? I'd be a bronze beauty, too. Yup, I'd forgo the sun screen and actually let myself get a tan. And the sand is pink...not white. How cool is that!! Oh, and not only do you get a robe, you get slippers, too. Maybe I get too excited over little things...but keeps me young and says I'm not too snobby to enjoy simple things. Depending on when you go, room rates are from $200 - $575 per night. The cottages are from $600 - $1300 per night. So like I said Baby, start saving.

Should I or shouldn't I?

This was the question on the bus today.

I was sitting behind an old guy. He had some sparse gray hair and the typical bald patch on the crown of his head. As I sat there behind him, I noticed something. There was a black ant crawling around on this head! I quickly got a case of the itches. It was really hard not to look at it and I wished I could move, but I had the window seat and someone was sitting next to me. I knew the girl next to me didn't notice because she was reading. So there I sat trying to ignore this. I wanted to tap him of the shoulder and tell him, but he also had someone sitting next to him and I thought it might be a little embarrassing for him if these people heard me tell him ~ I was clearly the only person aware of it. Plus, I didn't want him to ask me to get it out...this I was not willing to do ~ ICK!! We got all the way to my stop and the people sitting next to both of us were getting off with me. I asked myself "do I tell him or not?". I just felt weird about it, but I knew I'd want someone to tell me if I had a bug in my hair. So I got up and as I was getting off the bus, I stopped, leaned down and quietly said,"Um, Sir....there is an ant crawling around in your hair." He looked mortified and quickly started running his fingers thru his hair. I quickly exited the bus.

There, I did my good deed for the day.

The Bottom Line

by BeatBoxBetty

Hello! magazine is reporting that the posters advertising the new romantic comedy "Gigli" feature an altered version of J.Lo's bottom, which has been dramatically downsized.

The 'zine features a full report on the backside in question, showing an image of the poster featuring a trimmed-down version of her famous bottom and even a boost to her boobs. They also show a "real life" shot, which clearly shows a smaller-on-top J.Lo with a definitely bigger bum.

So was she behind the reduction of her behind? Or was it the marketing geniuses that had their way with her image? While some reports claim that the actress is bound to be furious (a spokesman for the star has said, "I'm absolutely shocked. Who would ever think this could possibly happen in Hollywood?") others claim that it was J.Lo herself who was unhappy with her appearance on the posters.

A source who saw the before and after shots revealed: "Columbia's marketing division airbrushed her butt to make it smaller and pumped up her chest." And another movie insider confirmed: "Jennifer was unhappy with the photo and asked for it to be retouched."

But wait, there's more! According to one of my favorite rumor hounds, E!Online's Ted Casablanca, the latest dirt on J.Lo is that she may be preggers. How convenient. The tabloid fodder is just in time for a slew of Ben and Jen's 31 Flavors film releases. But despite the fact that the diva (who can strike terror in the hearts of hotel staffers) was spotted recently shopping at a Baby Gap in Las Vegas, Ted thinks the rumors of her having a bun in the oven are false. I guess in a few months we'll know. Let's face it -- they may be able to trim a few inches off her derriere, but hiding a baby is a tougher act.

Viagra. We've all heard of it ~ I can't imagine that there is someone who has not heard of it. But honestly, do we all exactly know what it's for? I heard a commercial on the radio for it and I got to thinking about who would use this stuff and why? Is it for guys who can't get it up? Or is it for guys who can get it up, but can't keep it up? Or for guys who are not in the mood to get it up? Or for all of those things? I didn't really know. So because I'm curious, I did a little research. Here's what I found out.

Excerpt from viagra.com:
VIAGRA enables many men with erectile dysfunction to respond to sexual stimulation. When a man is sexually excited, the arteries in the penis relax and widen. This allows more blood to flow into the penis. The increased blood flow causes the penis to become hard and erect. The veins that normally carry blood away from the penis then become compressed. This restricts the blood flow out of the penis. With more blood flowing in and less flowing out, the penis enlarges, resulting in an erection. Sometimes the nerves or blood vessels that are part of this process don’t work properly. If this happens, a man may not be able to get an erection. VIAGRA increases blood flow to the penis, so that when a man is sexually excited, he can get and keep an erection. When the sexual encounter is over, the erection goes away.

There you have it folks, up front and in color facts about Viagra.

Speaking of drugs.....

Don't you just love those happy sunshiney drug commercials on TV with people running carefree thru a field of wild flowers because they have taken some drug that cured some awful problem they had and now their life is full of smiles and sweet dreams. It all sounds great until the very last 10 seconds of the commercial when that guy who talks really fast comes on and says: side affects include diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, etc. Right about then, the chick running thru the flower field should trip and fall on her ass. Now that would be funny!

Case in point: Effexor ~ a drug prescribed for depression.

I kid you not, these are the "reported side affects" listed on their website in alphabetical order:

agitation, anorexia, anxiety, confusion, coordination impaired, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, dysphoric mood, fasciculation, fatigue, headache, hypomania, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, nightmares, seizures, sensory disturbances, somnolence, sweating, tremors, vertigo, and last but not least, vomiting

Well....at least you won't be depressed!!!

Happy Monday to all :)

Who watched the interview with the skanky Lopez woman and Ben Affleck? I didn't see it, but I read the transcripts. Yuck. Those two just have no idea that they're wrong for each other. I need to have a chat with Ben and he'll see the light. But I suppose I better not start off with:

"Ben, honey.....she's a skank. You need to ditch her. Send Jen back to the block and go get Gweneth back"

He might not take to that right off the bat. I'll have to think about how to go about this...

-

On my way to work this morning I was listening to an oldies station....really old stuff. This song comes on and I've heard it before and like it. I have no idea who sings it....some old guy. I've got the name of it figured out ~ pretty obvious. When I get to work I do a search for "My Maria" and I come up with lyrics by Brooks & Dunn that match, but I'm positive this isn't the same version I heard on the radio. I listen to the B&D version and it unfortunately has a Country twang that oldies version I heard didn't have. It's really close tho....they sing it just like the other guy does. So I bookmaked it and can get a My Maria fix whenever I need it :) If you're interested, click
here to listen to it.

The Positive Power of Your Underwear

Surround yourself with positive power just by choosing the right color of underwear. Depending on the color you select, you can attract anything your heart desires:

WHITE – White symbolizes divine love, purity & healing & is a good choice for anyone in poor health. White can help improve your psychic powers and spiritual outlook.

RED – Red is a love magnet. For optimum results choose soft fabrics like silk – don’t pick cotton if you’re looking for love.

YELLOW – Yellow brings peace of mind and calm to a restless spirit. Darker shades are great for attracting money – light shades for bringing happiness.

BLACK – Black gives you strength and the power to dominate and take charge of relationships, both personal and professional. Wear them when you’re with a man or woman you want to control or when you decide to ask for a raise.

PURPLE – Purple brings good fortune.

NUDE OR TAN - You'll probably attract an accountant or a librarian (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

GREEN - You're in the mooood!

COMMANDO - Watch out world!

I'm not telling what color I have on today! *wink*

Blogging on a Mac sucks. You won't catch me saying the words "Mac sucks" very often. I love my Mac and would buy a Mac over a PC in a heartbeat. You don't know how bad I want a iBook at home. Tho if I got one, I'd be on it way too much and trun into a geek like Greg. *grin* Anyway, blogging on a PC is easier. The screen layout is much better and it has editing options which, for some weird reason, are not available when you blog with a Mac. Anyone know why they are different?

God, I'm tired. I didn't sleep well because I watched one of those Life In The ER type shows last night. It was called Maternity Ward....women giving birth. All the cases were complicated in some way. It was a bit depressing. If it were just a show about healthy babies one right after another, that would be a little dull. I should know better than to watch stuff like that because I'm an emotional person who cries at weddings and movies, but I was just so curious and kept watching to see what would happen. It's all real life and by the end of the show you find out how each case turns out. This one baby was just the sweetest looking baby ever. You can't say that about very many new born babies....they are kinda....well....not too cute right out of the oven. But this one was cute and had the best disposition! It was something about the way she was so alert and she just seemed happy. Most newborns have that "deer caught in headlights" look about them that I don't think goes away for a few weeks. I suppose I can understand...being born has got to be really loud and scary. But anyway, this cute one had lots of issues...big time issues. Just *one* of her problems was that her bladder was outside her body. I know, I don't understand either and I was watching the show. It's rare. So she had to have surgery to put it inside and to also fix her pelvis which was not shaped correctly. They put her in a little pink body cast and I just felt so bad for her. Poor thing could not have felt very good, yet she looked happy as a clam. And back to my original point ~ I didn't sleep well because that show made me sad :(

Okay, I think we all need to read this book. Mark T. Sullivan seems a very interesting person. I heard an interview with him and they talked about his book called "The Serpent's Kiss". How scary is that title! It's a murder mystery that takes place IN SAN DIEGO. He used to live here back in 1986 when he worked for the Union Tribune. During the interview he said if you live in San Diego, you'll know exactly where some of these events take place because he uses real landmarks. But apart from that, it just sounds like a really interesting story. He'll be signing books at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore in Clairemont tonight at 7pm. I'm half tempted to go because, not only does the book sound good, but that bookstore sounds interesting, too. Here is a review of his book and a link to his website.

Have a great day!

Remember I posted an itinerary for a friend who was traveling to Europe back in April? Well she's back and I'm meeting her and a few other people for Happy Hour to see her pictures tonight! She came into my office last to day hello and was glowing. We didn't have a lot of time to talk, but I did get to hear her fairytale love story....she met a guy when she got back. You all know how I love romance! She's happy and that's so nice to see. Before she went on her trip, she seemed to have lost that inner spark that made her beem. But now....well let's just say that like Stella, she's got her groove back! The trip to Europe is what seems to have done it ~ she says we all should take one really huge vacation at least once in their life. Um, Greg....did you hear that? ;->

...

Moving on. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I think I listen pretty well. Tho now that I say that, Murphy's Law will strike and I'll have a super bad day because of something I didn't listen to, but anyway...

Yesterday I called in an order for pizza and garlic bread for lunch at Flippie's. Greg loves their cheesy garlic bread but they put this read sauce on with the garlic butter that's a little much. We always get it without that. So this is how I ordered it:

"And an order of cheesy garlic bread without the red sauce on it," I said.
"So just butter garlic then?" she says.
"Yes," I say.

So what do you think I should have got? I think I should have got an order of cheesy garlic bread without the red sauce on it. Well that isn't what I got. I picked it up, came home, and unwrapped the garlic bread. No cheese. Just garlic butter. I stood there for a second and looked at it. How on earth did she get the idea I didn't want any cheese? We never talked no cheese! I said cheesy garlic bread with NO red sauce!

Whatever.

I know some people will say it's my fault because I should have said "And cheese" after she said "So just butter garlic then?", but I disagree with that. If she had listened to what I ordered, I would have got the correct thing. It wasn't awful....but it wasn't cheesy. But there was cheese on the pizza, so all was not lost. *grin*

Friday Five

Think about these questions and answer them truthfully.

1. You're in a department store shopping. You witness a teenager shoplift something. Do you ignore it or discreetly alert someone who works there?

2. You borrow something of high value from a friend. While it's in your possession, you unintentionally break it. Do you (and you must pick one of the following answers):

A: Buy them a new one even tho it puts you in significant debt.
B: Return it broken and hope they don't notice.
C: Buy one of lesser quality that you can afford and give it to them.

3. You find nude pictures of a co-worker on the Internet that look to be about 10 years old. You are 100% sure it is them. Do you share the information with other people in the office well aware that the person in question would probably not like this getting out?

4. You work in a lab and have access to drugs. You're low on cash and your car insurance is a month late. You are approached by an acquaintance who has taken a collection around their neighborhood and offers you $200 to give them a durg to kill a dog in their neighborhood that barks all night. It cannot be traced back to you. Would you take the easy money and give them the drug?

5. For the last 15 years you have kept a dark ugly secret about a family member because you were afraid for your safety. You unexpectedly are asked by other family members if you have any information relating to the secret ~ they suspect you do. Now married and not only scared for your own safety, but your spouses safety. Do you hope & pray nothing happens as you confess what you know, or let the terrible secret continue?

Email me your answers if you care to :)

A few things to talk about today.

I just read that a man woke up from a coma after 19 years. Amazing. He thinks Ronald Regan is still president...thank God that isn't the case. Back in 1984 he was in a car wreck and has been in a coma until now. His first 3 words were Mom, Pepsi & milk. I see a Pepsi or "got milk" gig in his future.

While I was driving to work today, I heard a radio commercial for a new kind of breast enhancement. This sounds so crazy that I had to look up the site and read more about it. This doctor is performing boob jobs thru the belly button. Yes, it's true....I looked at the pictures. He makes an incision in the belly button, inserts a tissue expander that goes up under the breast muscle and creates a "pocket" for the implant sack, then fills it with saline. Are you all unconsciously rubbing your belly button or breast area right now? *laugh*

So the big thing about this is, there are no telltale scars and the recovery time is faster and less painful than the usual method....so they say. Sorry, but I'm not sure I want a "tissue expander" inserted anywhere on my body! Not only does it sound bad, but it has got to hurt like a...um, well...it just must hurt a lot. And for those of you who wanna see the
boob pics...

There you have it...from comas to boob jobs. What can I say ~ I'm a diverse blogger.

Ever heard of a pandemic? Do you know what the difference between a pandemic and an epidemic are?

Epidemic: Affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time. Typhoid was an epidemic.

Pandemic: Occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population. The 1918 flu, aka Spanish flu, was a pandemic.

We've all heard of typhoid...it's a bad thing. But how many people have heard about the 1918 flu? It's history is far worse than typhoid. This flu outbreak killed over 40-million people worldwide ~ 40-million. Within 3 days of catching it, you were dead. There were so many people dying that funerals were limited to 15 minutes so the next could start. In early 1919, the public health department distributed gauze makes to people and were to be worn while in public. Stores were restricted from having sales in order to keep large numbers of people out of confined spaces. Some towns required a signed health certificate to enter. Can you imagine all of that going on? With that many people dying of it worldwide, you have to wonder if someone if your family history died from it.

It's estimated that another flu pandemic is coming. We hear that stuff all the time. But the scary thing is, they are trying to find a strain of that exact flu virus so they can do research on it. They found frozen corpses in Alaska and Norway that died of the 1918 flu and are hoping the virus is still alive in the frozen tissue to they can do tests on it. How scary this that?! I have wonder if we're all just a little too curious. Ever heard the term "let sleeping dogs lie"? This might be a good one to let lie.....

I have a tiny pocket of time to blog this morning ~ it's going to be busy just like it was last week.

I was such a loaf yesterday. All I did was sleep, eat, and watch TV. I think I must have gained 3 pounds because I was eating junk food all day. I didn't even get out of my pj's or go outside.....major loafing. I got some "cinematheraphy" and watched "Ghost" as part of my loafing experience. I love Whoopi in that movie...she's just too funny. Have you ever seen her in "Jumping Jack Flash"? That's another one that I love her in. So anyway, in an attempt to do something about the junk food pounds I'm sure I gained, I parked off campus and walked to work. I have not done this in months! I can't even remember the last time I did that. Also part of the reason I did this was, I just couldn't bring myself to ride the bus again this morning. There is just something about that bus that I can't deal with every single day. I opted to walk over ride....you know it has to be bad if I'll walk in 80 degree heat over riding in an air conditioned bus. I can't really say why I don't like riding the bus. I don't mind the shuttle at all...it's a 100 times better than the bus. It must be the people. Students ride the shuttle mostly and are usually well kept and bathe. The same cannot be said about people who ride the bus. Also, no one ever "adjusted" themselves in front of me on the shuttle. Yeah, I think it's the quality of people.

Back to work now ~ I have 100 things to do.

What a day...I can't recall a day when I have been busier. But I'm taking a break from it all because I'm sure I'll go crazy if I don't.

I was in the rest room today and I realized that I could hear the person in the other stall peeing. Now I know this is a weird thing to talk about, but come on...have you ever really thought about that? I mean we can hear a total stranger doing something we usually don't even let our spouse or significant other listen to. And you can hear other stuff....like zipping, unzipping, pulling pants up/down, that subtle snap of the elastic in your underwear when it hits your skin. I didn't move until I heard the flush of their toilet so I knew they wouldn't hear all that stuff when I did it. I know, I know....I think about stuff too much. That person probably isn't strange like me thinking about that stuff and listening. What can I say....my mind is always working like that.

Back to the ole grind. Have a safe and happy 4th!
