The Wongs

Su Yang meets and marries Lee Wong. The next year, the Wong's have a baby. The nurse brings to them their lovely, healthy, bouncy, but definitely Caucasian, baby boy!

"Congratulations," says the nurse to the new parents. "What will you name the baby?"

The puzzled father looks at his baby boy and says, "Well, two Wong's don't make a white, so I think we will name him Sum Ting Wong."

The Skinny On H2O

We've all heard the "drink 8 glasses of water daily" spheel. Well, I new information on the subject....and I'm pretty darn excited about it.

Here's the deal.

The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in Washington, DC published an article this year that says Americans get enough water without trying. The average woman takes in approximately 91 ounces a day and the average man takes in 125 ounces from various sources, including juice, fruits, vegetables, and even coffee.
Without even trying, people generally get enough water.

"We're saying that there is no need to count glasses of water. So don't sweat it: You're probably well hydrated," says Michael Sawka, who was on the board that conducted the study.

Marion Nestle, professor of nitrition and food studies at NYU, agrees: "Most people know when they are thristy and drink enough."

They go on to say that you should use common sense when choosing what you drink. For example, 6 cups of coffee isn't the way to go even tho it's a source of water. Coffee is a diuretic and the caffeine will cause other problems for you. If you choose to drink juice and are on a calorie counting diet, flavored seltzer water is a better choice beause it has no calories. And, most brands of seltzer are low in sodium and add calcium and magnesium as an extra benifit.

So there you have it. I'm so glad I don't have to think about getting down 64oz of water a day.

And speaking of coffee, did you know there is a coffee olympics...of sorts? Check
this out.

The Comforting Smell of Books

Okay, so I started browsing Amazon.com for something to read and wow....look what I found!

Dance With The Devil

I'd dance with the devil if he looks like the dude on the cover of that book! Oh my....he's a honey and a half. I might have to get that book. Yes, I know it's one of those predictable lust-laced stories....but I'm a chick....I go for that stuff.

Getting back to the real world, maybe I'll get this one, too.

Nothing wrong with running off with a handsome devil for a while so long as you come back to reality ;-)

What Not To Wear

Is your outfit office appropriate?

Don't: Rubber flip-flops
Instead... Try a pair of simple slides with or without a kitten heel. Or pick a refined pair of thongs with a small heel (it will make them dressier than the beach version). These options will keep your feet as cool and dry as flip-flops would, but will look more appropriate with office attire.

Don't: Shorts and cutoffs
Instead... Wear a pair of tailored capris. Shorts have too much of a weekend feel to look professional; capris, on the other hand, are summery but more put-together. Top your capris with a lightweight blazer or simple sweater set.

Don't: Tank tops
Instead... Choose sleek shells with more conservative necklines. Because most tank tops are clingy and bare much skin (shoulders, cleavage, back), they're a bit too relaxed for the office. But a sleeveless shell with a higher scoop or demure V-neck gives office-worthy coverage and has the same cooling effect.

Don't: Miniskirts
Instead... Choose a full skirt that falls just above the knee. Minis are most appropriate for teenagers, and are certainly too bare and sexy for work. To get the same effect, try a '50s-inspired full skirt that falls just above or to the knee -- it has the flirtiness of a mini, but looks more grown-up.

Don't: Wispy sundresses
Instead... Pick a shift dress, a cut that looks good on almost anyone. While some workplaces will allow a flimsy, floaty sundress, most are too conservative for such a romantic piece. A shift gives you the same cool, easy feel, but looks much more professional.

Someone Finally Caught On

If you look at my post dated 8/5/03, you'll see I picked Dylan McDermott and Julianna Margulies to pair up and have babies. Well, they're not having a baby, but they are starring in a show together!!! Some brilliant casting person figured out how stunning these two people would look together. You can see them in the new series called
"The Grid" on TNT. The season premier was this past Monday, but I'm sure you can catch it again sometime this week if you're interested :)

---

And an update on my post dated 6/23/04. So far I have:

Seen 1 movie - 3 to go
Have kissed my husband many times
Painted my patio - tho Greg and Jason did most of the work
Had a BBQ
Have missed my husband when he's not with me
Been really good about eating fruit once a day
I'm liking my job more than I used to
And, I sing at my desk and in my car....but not in the shower

So I have some work to do. Gotta get planting, writing, walking, stamping, baking, selling furniture, and running in the sprinklers.

*sigh*

Me, Defined

I read this and I felt like it was written for me personally. It's pretty amazing considering it's written for all Libras. Good and bad...it's all me.

Libra
Libra is the seventh Sign of the Zodiac. The first six Signs represent personal development, while the second six represent man's turning outward to other people. Libra is the first Sign in this half of the Zodiac, and thus it's the first Sign of reaching out to others -- they strive to create balance and harmony between self and other. It represents marriage and partnership, the most basic ways for people to come together. As the seventh Sign, Libra also rules the seventh House: the House of Partnership.

The Sign In Depth
The Astrological Symbol of Libra is the Scales. Like the scales of Justice, Librans are objective and just. They abhor unfairness and conflict, striving above all for peace; but at times they are easily deterred from their beliefs. Librans are able to see all sides of an argument, but as their mental scales sway back and forth they may never find balance and become fickle and indecisive. Sometimes they are so eager to avoid conflict that they give in to avoid argument, even when they know they are right, and this may make them seem insincere.

I do this all the time! I give in to aviod conflict!

Diplomatic and cooperative, they are skilled at initiating group projects. In this way, Libra exemplifies the Cardinal Quality assigned to it. When Librans set goals for themselves, they are determined to succeed.

And often are never pleased with their work.......

Within the Zodiac, Libra is opposite Aries, the Sign of Self, so Libras tend to be about other people rather than personal development.

Believe it or not, I always put others before me.  Personal development seems to come last with me.

They tend to be socially inclined and charming, but they may have a need to be liked that makes them too compliant to others' wishes.  Libra is ruled by the Planet Venus. In ancient Roman mythology, Venus (and her Greek equivalent, Aphrodite) was the Goddess of Love, Beauty, and Pleasure. She represented joy, happiness, and appreciation of beautiful things.

Pretty things.....if I were rich, I'd have such a pretty house.

On the negative side, her appreciation for sweets and luxury could result in overindulgence, and she could be materialistic. Venus rules both Libra and Taurus. Libra is the masculine, or day, aspect of Venus; Taurus is the feminine, or night. Both Signs have a great appreciation for beauty, but while Taurus appreciates the beauty of things, Libra is more interested in the beauty of other people.

I can find beauty in just about anybody. Even people I really don't like.

Librans are happiest when they're in a relationship. They are seductive and attractive, and their cultural awareness and talkative nature make them help them shine in the social situations they so enjoy.  Because of their social nature, they can be vain or overly dependent on others' approval.

It's true, I look for approval from people.  I wish I could please my parents, but I'm never sure if they are proud of me or think I'm an idiot.  It's nice to be liked, but I usually feel like an outsider craving social acceptence.

Many people born under Libra have strong artistic tendencies and a refined sense of style, but they can also become lazy and apathetic if bored. They are usually controlled and rational, but at times they may be self-indulgent.

Soooo true!

The Element associated with Libra is Air. Air Signs are intellectual: they tend to respond to the world through intellect, rather than physical action, practicality, or emotion. Libra's intellectual orientation to the world around them makes them skilled at communication and abstract reasoning, and their intelligence combines with their interest in other people to become an intellectual exploration of the people around them.

This is complex way of saying I try to understand people.  What gives this validation is, people tell me their problems and secrets.  I try to understand the best I can.

Because their efforts are mentally rather than emotionally motivated, Librans tend to be very judicial; they are good at diplomacy and compromise. Because they are generally reluctant to face confrontation, people born under Libra learn to be persuasive, courteous, and adaptable. But this may also make them seem cold and unemotional or manipulative.

This line above is spot on. I come across cold. People seem to think I'm mad and it drives me crazy!!  But once they know I'm not a cold hard bitch, they're tellin' me their secrets.

They are team workers, skilled at cooperative action, but they can also be self-doubting. Open minded and always polite, they have a strong sense of loyalty because of their ability to put themselves into other people's shoes.

Librans love to debate but not to quarrel; a fine distinction that is nonetheless very important to people born under this Sign. They are kind and considerate, and they rarely display anger.

I do get mad, but it's true that people rarely see me blow my top. However, if you rip my fence down again - pray...pray very hard. My rare display of anger is about to kick you in the balls. It's a long story if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Instead they may employ subtle means of getting even when their strong sense of fairness and legality or refined sensitivities are violated.

It's called karma, folks. I'll take comfort in knowing that if you do me wrong, karma will catch up with you....and it bites hard.

In their leisure time, Librans tend to have less energy that other Signs, and they have a definite lazy streak, preferring to read and go out with friends. Exercise generally appeals to them only if it allows socializing at the same time, but some have a particular affinity for activities that let them get out in nature, such as hiking and horseback riding. In love relationships, Libra is playful and romantic.

I'm soooo lazy! Napping is one of my favorite things.  And romantic....I'm all about romance....and naps.

Libra rules the kidneys and lower back. People born under Libra may be more susceptible to back pain or strain than people of other Signs. Libra's colors are ivory, pink, and light blue; these three colors are harmonious in all their combinations, and they all appear in the sunset sky that Libra represents.

Wow, "the sunset sky that Libra represents".  That's such a pretty image!

The great strength of the Libra-born is in their drive for peace and harmony. Their ability to obtain balance and cooperation from a disparate group is unparalleled. Their skill at seeing all sides of a situation makes them one of the most just characters of the Zodiac.

Harmony. Don't you just love the sound of that word?! ;-)

Just Gotta Wonder...

Before I get to what I'm posting, I want to say...I do stupid things. However, I'd like to think I would never do something like what the two men did in the article below.

Men Throwing Fireworks Leave Window Up

SALT LAKE CITY - Two men planning to throw lighted fireworks from a car were burned when they forgot to roll down the window.

"They lit a large mortar rocket firework" and were going to throw it out the window, Salt Lake County sheriff's Sgt. John Barker said. "The passenger threw it out the window, but he forgot to roll the window down. It bounced back in his lap."

Adam Weber, 24, was in fair condition Thursday at the Intermountain Burn Unit at University Hospital with second and third degree burns on his arms, legs and torso.

"He's going to be in a lot of pain. I don't think it's life-threatening, but he's going to have a hard time. It's going to be a long process to get him healed up," Barker said.

The driver, Jared Williams, only had minor burns to his back.

The accident happened about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The investigation has been turned over to the Unified Fire Authority. An officer told KSL-TV any charges filed likely would be just misdemeanors.

How it all started

On my way to work I was thinking about my Mom and Dad.

My Mom's parents were not poor, but they didn't have a lot of money. Her Dad was a trucker, so he was gone during the week and home on weekends. They bought an old milk store and tunred it into a house. I'm serious.

Milk stores were not very big since they only sold milk. This store they bought was about 30 or 40 steps from the front door to the back door. It was one long room with the bathroom being the only extra room with a door. There were no bedrooms. The bathroom had no shower. Eventually they got a bathtub. I'm not even sure if the house has a shower in it now. It had a kitchen at one end, but it wasn't very big.

So the bedrooms: They were along one side and were closed off by curtains....no doors. Think of a shower curtain...that's how it was - one long wall was sectioned off by these curtains. On the other side of the curtains was the living room and the dining area. NO privacy.

Can you imagine growing up like this?

I didn't know about any of this until about 3 years ago when I went back to South Dakota with my Mom to visit my Grandpa. The last time I had been back there was when I was a little kid...maybe 5 years old. This house amazed me. Those curtains are still up to section off the "bedrooms" from the living room and dining room. When I asked my Mom about it all, she said it was hard, but that's just the way it was. She was one of 4 kids - one sister and two brothers. Nothing was secret and they all knew each others business.

I can't even imagine living like that.

Now my Dad's life was much different. On the other side of town he lived in a nice big house with his own room. His Dad was the cheif of police. From what I understand, my Dad and my Uncle were the town pranksters. My poor Grandpa had these two sons who got in trouble more than the other kids in town. They were always doing something. I can see that about my Dad.

My Dad's sister was friends with my Mom and this is how it all started. Turns out my Mom wasn't really that interested in dating my Dad because she didn't see what everyone else saw in him. Eventually they were set up on a date as a favor my Mom did for my Aunt Elaine. So 19 year old Bunnie (short for Bonita) went out with 24 year old Carl. Tuns out he wasn't as bad as she thought ;-)

The rest, as they say, is history.

Dog Days

The hippest dog In Hollywood is the labradoodle. Yup, you read it correctly....labradoodle. It's a cross between a labrador and a poodle. The dog was first bred by an Australian Wally Cochrane for a blind woman who was allergic to her labrador guide dog. By cross breeding with a poodle, he created a dog that doesn't shed, so there is no allergies. All the celebrities want one of these dogs now. The chocolate lab is out and the "it" dog....it's now the labradoodle.

Is that crazy or what?!

Miss Me?

It's been a while since I've updated. I've been very busy, but I think things are slowing down so I'll have a little more time to post again. I know you'll rest easier knowing that ;-)

Everyone has a twin....that's what they say. Last month in Jane Magazine they had a section of people who look like famous people. There was one girl who was dead on Valerie Bertinelli. I sat and looked at the picture of about a minute trying to something about this woman that didn't look like Valerie....but I just couldn't. There was a little quote below the picture that said something like: "I've gotten back stage at concerts because I look like her". I bet she could get a job as a double for her. Amazing.

As a side note, Jane Magazine is really good. If you've never seen a copy of it, check it out. Good fashion and make-up stuff in there.

Okay, so back to what I was trying to get at with the "everyone has a twin" thing. Greg has one. The guy lives right here in San Diego! We were at Smart & Final for something a week or two ago and we go to check out - there he was. I wanted to tell Greg they looked alike, but the guy would have heard me. I could not stop looking at him!! When we got outside and I told Greg and he just shook his head and said the guy looked nothing like him. Well, he's wrong. Except for the fact that his hair is lighter than Greg's, this guy is Greg's twin. They even have the same lips! We had to go back on Friday night for something, and there he was again. This time Greg was rolling his eyes at me while we were standing in line at the check out counter because he knew what I was thinking and he still thinks they look nothing alike.

And, he's a honey. Man....cute as a button. How could he not be looking like Greg? I'd have an huge crush on him if I worked there. Crystal clear blue eyes like Greg's....*swoon*

So, if you are in Clairemont, go to S&F and look for Jessie and end the debate bwtween Greg and I. Does he or does he not look like Greg with lighter hair? You be the judge.

Living In America

Yesterday I was reading the opinions of a woman who has lived in the US for 5 years, but isn't American. She says she's not real happy living here....there are a bunch of things about the US and it's citizens that irk her. I wanted to cut and paste her little rant into my blog, but she has removed it from her site. I imagine she's been getting a lot of email about it from her US readers. It seemed a lot of her problems were with how she is treated here. She gave examples of things like her use of the word elastics rather than rubber bands and washroom rather than bathroom/restroom. I guess us Americans are amused and correct her...."You mean rubber bands?". She thinks they are making fun of her. I suppose some people could be making fun of her, but I think a lot of people are just pointing out what we tipically call them and are not making fun of her at all.

So she points out other things ~ like being yelled at when she goes into a store. She gave the example of walking into the Gap and a girl from 20 feet away said: "HI! HOW ARE YOU? GOOD TO SEE YOU!". Of course it was a sales girl. I will admit that I find this technique of establishing communication with customers annoying. However, I would not say they are "yelling" at me exactly. It's a greeting. Smile and ignore them if it bothers you. Simple as that.

Our money is very green....she wonders why we can't add a little color.

Americans wear too much black. I, for one, am guilty of this. I'd estimate 70% of my clothes are black. This woman does not own a piece of black clothing.

Americans are obsessed with appliances. Uh...yeah? So? We like cool stuff. Well, she isn't....or doesn't, I guess.

Okay, so at the end of her rant, she said something like "and all the American's that read this will get huffy and tell me to go back were I came from....blah, blah....rather than trying to have a conversation about it". Well, you just blasted us - what do you expect? She says getting huffy is the American way, too. I actually agree with her on this. We do get too huffy, but that isn't to say people in other countries don't get huffy, too. We do not have the corner market on huffyness.

And, if I went to another country and asked where the restroom was, would they give me a strange look and say "do you mean the washroom?". If I asked for a rubber band, would they correct me and say they're called elastics?

I get that she thinks we are narrow minded and huffy....and wear black clothes, but I guess I just don't get why she can't see past this stuff and find the open minded people and the really kind people who live here. They're not that hard to find. And I can think of two people who would wear black only if they were going to a funeral.

I guess I just think we're not that bad and that it's a pretty nice place to live.

Have a happy and safe 4tth of July!
